Iran's Rural and Agricultural Cooperatives ensure Safe Food: Deputy Minister

The senior official of Agriculture-jahd ministry said that Production of safe food is embedded in the vision and mission of rural and agricultural cooperatives.

Hossein Shirzad, who is also chairman of the board of the Central Organization of Rural Cooperatives of Iran (CORC), on the occasion of world food day (October, 16th), declared that in a world where unhealthy and poor nutrition is the prime cause of death due to non-contagious diseases in human societies such as cancers, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, it is natural that healthy food plays a key role in the global fight against hunger and malnutrition.

Maintaining the significance of appropriate policy-making to address providing safe nutrition for all of the human beings, the official asserted that the issue is included in the vision and mission of the rural and agricultural cooperatives, as well.

"Rural and Agricultural cooperatives have a valuable capacity in the field of organic and safe food production; therefore   CORC has been taking great strides in the path of healthy and organic crop development through providing supporting services. Many of these cooperatives have succeeded to produce a large volume of safe and certified crops including saffron, olives, pistachio, raisins, tomato, and dates," the Official added.

Referring to the MOU signed between national unions and European corporations for executing the project on the production of safe and organic crops, Shirzad expresses hope to adopting new approaches in organic production by rural and agricultural cooperatives.
